Abraham Lincoln Presidents

The History Place Presidents of the United State of America

He was born in Kentucky on 12 February 1809, into a very poor family, so poor that for the first seven years of his life he usually wore only a shirt.

He hardly went to school at all; in the whole of his life he spent less than one year in a classroom, but he taught himself a great deal from books, and life taught him even more.

He managed to learn to read, and in a few months in one school, to write and to count. After that, he read every book he could put his hands on, that is, every book within eigthy kilometres of the Lincoln home.

He read every minute of the day when he was not working, and sometimes when he ought to have been working. But he also learned by asking question to every one who came to his way and who could tell him somehting new.
